Fate/stay Night

Post by Anijunkie on Thu Jun 16, 2011 7:30 am

Some of you guys saw this coming but I felt a need to do this. BTW, I type the last name first, then the first name.

From a reviewer on ANN
They say that pets resemble their owners; sometimes it seems the same is true for shows and their main characters. Take Shana, a scrappy little series prone to unpredictable, mercurial shifts, with a slight structure that belies its powerful wallop. Or Fate/stay night and Saber: coldly beautiful and quietly calculating; capable of complete ruthlessness and hell on wheels during a fight, but something of an emotional retard.

Plot background: Seven mages compete in a battle in Fuyuki City known as the Holy Grail War. Each mage must summon a Servant, a heroic spirit from the past, present, or future to participate in the War. The seven Servant classes are Lancer, Saber, Rider, Archer, Assassin, Caster, and Berserker. The last mage, or Master, standing at the end of the War with his or her Servant will have one wish granted. The story follows a young man, Emiya Shirou, when he becomes a Master unexpectedly. Along the way, he meets some powerful allies and many more powerful enemies.

Fate/stay Night started out as an eroge Visual Novel created by TYPE-MOON and held three different routes (endings). The routes are called Fate, Unlimited Bladeworks, and Heaven's Feel. The Fate route's main heroine was Saber, the Servant of Emiya Shirou. The Fate route is normally regarded by many fans the worst one out of the three due to its terrible ending and extremely corny tear jerking moments that make you want to smash the computer screen out of anger. The Unlimited Bladeworks route's main heroine is Tohsaka Rin, a friend and ally to the Shirou. This route main focuses more on who Archer, Rin's servant, was in his past. This route, and many fans would agree with me, the best route in the Visual Novel. It's got a crazy plot that just builds up tons of suspense which leads up to two epic fight scenes (Sadly it's just text but they did make a movie which I'll review in a separate post). The Unlimited Bladeworks route also has two separete endings, the True end and the Good end and the factors for each ending depends on the choices the player has made. The third route, Heaven's Feel, is the longest route in the game with three different endings, the Simple end, the Good end (which was depressing as hell), and the True end. This route focuses more on Matou Sakura, the most underrated character in the entire series. (She's also Shirou's underclassman and has gone to his house every day since Shirou's father died to help him with the household chores. She also has a crush on Shirou). She was never important to the plot in the other two routes yet she gets an entire route for herself. The main reason is because here, in this route, everything that felt completely unrelated in Fate and Unlimited Bladeworks is now all connected. Loose ends are wrapped up and plot holes are filled. The history of the Holy Grail War is also revealed in this route. This route is long. and I mean LONG. What took me two days to complete all of Fate and Unlimited Bladeworks, took me FIVE DAYS OF GAME TIME to complete this monster of a route.

The series later had an anime adaption by Studio DEEN and a manga adaption. The VN was later re-released for the PS2, except with this version, TYPE-MOON decided to remove all the H-scenes and replaced them with something more appropriate. The PS2 version, renamed as Fate/stay Night Realta Nua, also featured a Last end. This end follows the ending of Fate, to compensate for having only one end. However, the player must achieve not only completing all of the routes with each end, but also going into all of the death scenes, where the player will then be led to the tiger dojo to learn their mistakes. There are around fifty tiger dojos to obtain. The series was also able to get a movie made, also made by Studio DEEN. TYPE-MOON also created a fandisk sequel, Fate/hollow Ataraxia, which continues from the end of Heaven's Feel.

Spin-off games: Fate/tiger Colloseaum and Fate/tiger Colloseaum 2 is a 3D fighting game based on the Fate plot and having all the characters go chibi. These two were released for the PSP. Fate/unlimited Codes, a 2D fighter, was also released for the PSP, licensed by Capcom and starring Saber Lily and Leysritt. Fate/Extra, released in 2010, is a dungeon crawler Persona-like RPG for the PSP featuring new Servants.

Review: So, in my opinion, Fate/stay night was okay as an anime with a plot that went a little downhill when it started to become a harem. I first got into (and became somewhat obsessed) with Fate from the anime. Back then, I thought it was really good but I couldn't accept the ending. I ended up doing some research on it and found the VN, which I read through completely. I now feel that the anime failed at capturing all of the suspenseful and heat beating moments in the original VN. It didn't help that Studio DEEN chose the worst route out of the three to create the story with but that isn't where they screwed up. What they tried to do was to integrate some of Heaven's Feel and Unlimited Bladeworks into the Fate route to make it more interesting. Theoretically, it would have worked but the natural incoherence of the three routes provided a slightly miserable failure.

Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend watching the anime if you're just checking it out. For those that finished the VN, I recommend not watching the anime due to the high amount of flaws Studio DEEN had in the series.

Plot: 6.3 Starts off ok, gets better, then takes a huge dip

Visuals: 8 Good but could be better. Not much else to say. Fight scenes are great, but not on epic proportions.

Music: 8.5 Pretty good. Kawai Kenji did a great job arranging the songs from the original VN. The epic 'Emiya' theme, although only playing for 10/15 minutes, always puts me in a good mood.

Enjoyment: 8 I loved it the first time I watched it and would have given it a 9.5 if I hadn't read the VN.

Accuracy: 6 Only stuck to the plot generally. Tried to incorporate things from the other two routes in the VN by creating their own ideas. Theoretically, it would have worked, but Studio DEEN did a poor job in trying to connect the dots together.

Overall: 7.5 Plot failed to amuse me although the visuals and music were great. I applaud DEEN's efforts but it came out as a disappointment.
