Unlimited Bladeworks Incantation (Archer's version and Shirou's version)
I am the bone of my sword - I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood - Steel is my body and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades - I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death - Unaware of loss
Nor known to life - Nor aware of gain
Have withstood pain to create many weapons - Withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet those hands will never hold anything - I have no regrets, this is the only path
So as I pray, Unlimited Bladeworks. - My whole life was Unlimited Bladeworks.
I'm deciding to not put any background info here mainly cause I already wrote about it in the other Fate review. This is also just nitpicking because I am a huge TYPE-MOON fan (if you don't know already)
This is the movie version of Fate/stay Night. Now when I first saw the trailer for this, I was pumped. I couldn't believe that there was a movie on Fate, mainly cause I didn't think it was that well known. Well, Studio DEEN decided to make it so just knowing this dipped my expectations a little. However, contrary to the anime they made, Studio DEEN tried to focus just on the Unlimited Bladeworks route this time, known to fans (myself included) as the best route in the original VN. I didn't think they could screw this up, especially since there was supposed to be two amazing and epic fight scenes. Lo and behold, I seriously cannot believe they screwed it up again. Overall, as an anime movie, it was great. The animation was well done, the voice actors were pretty good, and they did manage to keep to the plot generally. What I was annoyed about was how they conducted the most dramatic parts of the movies. They barely built up to them where, in the VN, I could barely wait to read the epicness of the battles (although it doesn't really sound that exciting. reading, psh). When the battle finally got there, it felt too insignificant and less dramatic than what I was expecting. Another major feature I was disappointed in was the fact that they got the main poem wrong. The poem is one of the biggest symbols of the series and the fact that DEEN messed it up really pissed me off. But, if you're looking for just a movie to watch, I would definitely recommend this. Studio DEEN made the movie at least 20x better than the anime and I'm satisfied with that.
Plot: 6 It is such a mess and it is a pity. I realized that I wrote the review biased to the fact that I already knew what was happening, not aware to the average review who had probably not watched the series. In short, any average person who had not watched the series or read the VN will have absolutely no idea what it happening. Yes the fights scenes are epic but that will be explained in the Visuals. This incoherent mess of a plot cannot pass as anything that can be explained unless the viewer had taken the time to watch the 23 previous episodes of Fate or have spent 20+ hours on the route itself. Not to mention, they rushed too many things and left too many other things unexplained.
Visuals: 9.5 As great as they were, they weren't perfect. Yes the fights looked amazing. Yes the character models are probably the best that Studio DEEN has ever done. Yes the Unlimited Bladeworks project was seriously overbudgeted. Studio DEEN had a crap lot of money for this and they weren't ready to disappoint their fans.
Enjoyment: 8.5 As a Fate fan myself, I had a lot of enjoyment watching the series, but that was partially because I knew the story already. I knew what was about to happen and what to expect. Many elements lived up to my expectations, hell some even managed to exceed expectations with soaring colors, but there are still many elements that just left me hanging, left me to wonder why they did that, why they didn't do things the other way. Wasn't too disappointed but that was also me lowering myself to fit DEEN's standards.
Accuracy: 9 I am proud of DEEN for fulfilling their promise to stay on one route without straying but what I didn't expect was the amount of information they left out. a nine id being very, very generous but that's because I was so proud that they didn't stray this time.
Overall: 7.9 Honestly, without the backup knowledge from the VN, anime, or wikipedia, the viewer would definitely be lost throughout the entire series. The movie rushed through all of the necessary information to understand the what is even happening. Disappointed yes but I am slightly glad they stayed on track this time.
The incantation for Unlimited Bladeworks was not translated word for word.
