Slowly it's revealed that you're watching something very special and all that angst-ridden, blood-spattered sturm und drang will eventually come together to create an experience that is wholly unique in the world of anime. The barrier of entry – both emotionally and financially – are intimidating to say the least, but if the opportunity to subject yourself to this challenging and haunting series of films comes your way, you'd be remiss not to jump in.
Background info/history :(from TYPE-MOON WIKI) Kara no Kyoukai (空の境界?) is one of TYPE-MOON's earliest works authored by Nasu Kinoko and illustrated by Takeuchi Takashi. It is also known under the name Rakkyo (らっきょ?), and its tagline the Garden of sinners.
The series originally began in October 1998 as a series of five chapters released online on Nasu and Takeuchi's doujin-based website, Takebouki (竹箒?), with its final two chapters being released at the Comiket 56 in 1999. Nasu and Takeuchi were later to form TYPE-MOON, and in 2001, featured a portion of the book in its 2001 Tsukihime fandisk, Tsukihime PLUS-DISC, which saw it gain significant popularity, leading to its release as a doujinshi publication at the Comiket 61 on December 30, 2001
In September of 2002, a drama CD based on the series was released, and on August 6, 2004, noted publisher Kodansha released the series as a commercial publication, which enjoyed immense popularity, with 5000 limited edition versions of the novel being sold almost immediately upon release. Both editions of Kara no Kyoukai altogether sold more than 500,000 copies.
The series is regarded as being set in an alternate parallel universe to TYPE-MOON's other series, Tsukihime and Fate/stay night, which make references to Kara no Kyoukai. The protagonist of the series, Ryougi Shiki, possesses the same abilities as Tsukihime's protagonist, Tohno Shiki, and Aozaki Aoko's sister Aozaki Touko is a major character. In Fate/stay night, Aozaki Touko plays a small role in one ending, although she is not directly named.
The series has been adapted into a series movies divided into 7 chapters, animated by Ufotable. The first chapter was released in December 2007 at Theatres Shinjuku.
In September of 2010 a web comic adaptation began serialization in the online magazine "Saizensen", with drawings done by Sphere Tenku.
Review: This series is absolutely AMAZING. Yes it is comprised of seven movies but I believe that the time spent watching the series was really worth it. ufotable did an excellent job with it, creating the atmosphere and intensity beautifully. It was confusing at first though, mainly due to the fact that the movies start out of order. In order to understand it fully, I watched them again, now knowing all of the information I had from watching it a first time. The plot was easier to understand and it made me an immediate fanboy. Give it some time and I believe you will enjoy it too if you take the time to watch and rewatch it.
Plot: 9.5 It moves very slowly but as the viewer watches more, the plot starts to pull them into a seemingly vast and connected universe, full of holes that are continuously filled at the viewer watches (apart from the time spent looking at Kokutou Mikiya's face). Plot twists and subtle introductions of scenes that, at first glance, have nothing to do with the plot are cleverly woven into the main plot that, by the end of the seventh movie, all the lines are connected and all the holes are filled (mostly).
Visuals: 10 Just stunning. almost impossible to critique on. The artwork and animations portray the style of Takashi Takeushi wonderfully, mixing in his character designs with the harsh and desolate environments, weaving the beauty of the fluid battle animations into the movie without the slightest amount of choppiness.
Music: 10 Absolutely amazing. The ominous background pieces played during the dark scenes brings out the deepest of the environment, and the light scenes are always accompanied with subtle, yet light songs (the latter, the viewer will see very little of). Kalafina also does an amazing job with the ending pieces, putting their gothic songs to full work, which really pulls the viewer to watch until the credits end (something I have yet to see from anything in general).
Enjoyment: 10 I loved it from the beginning to the end. I couldn't stop watching the 8-9 hour long series. I felt a need to know what was happening next. Could not have felt happier in my life than when I finished the series (that's a lie obviously).
Accuracy: X From what I have read of the series so far, it has been almost accurate to even the precise wording of the characters. I have not read enough to say yet if it is accurate to the bone but so far, ufotable has been very accurate.
Overall: 9.9 It's a pity that I couldn't give this a 10 because of how slowly the plot moves but if the viewer can get past that obstacle, the they're really in for one of the best adaptions that TYPE-MOON can offer.
